2024/02/22

The New National Theatre Tokyo has announced its performance lineup for the 2024/2025 season. The New National Theatre Tokyo will present 10 operas, opening with a new production of Bellini’s “La Sonnambula.” Surprisingly, this is the first time that the New National Theatre has staged a Bellini work. Other than “La Sonnambula,” the other two new productions are Rossini’s “Guillaume Tell” and Toshio Hosokawa’s “Natasha.

According to the announcement, “Guillaume Tell” will be performed in French, the original language of the work. This will also be the first time in Japan. The season will conclude with the world premiere of “Natasha,” a work commissioned by the theater. The theater commissioned the composition of this piece, and novelist Yoko Tawada has written the script. Two young protagonists, guided by Mephistopheles’ grandson, experience various hells in which the natural environment has been destroyed.
