Manfred Honeck has extended his contract with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Honeck has been Principal Conductor since 2008, and this renewal extends his term to the end of the 2027/2028 season.
Honeck is 63 years old born in Nenzing, Austria. He became a conductor after working as a viola player for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. His younger brother, Rainer, is the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.。
His starting point as a conductor was the associate conductor of the Gustav Mahler Jugent Orchestra under Claudio Abbado.
Since then, he has been Principal Conductor and Music Director of the MDR Symphony Orchestra(1996-1999), the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra(2000-2006) and the Stuttgart State Opera(2007-2011).
In the new season, Horneck will hold five world premiere concerts, including works commissioned by the orchestra. In April 2022, for the first time in the orchestra’s 125-year history, he will spend a week performing a concert of all nine Beethoven symphonies.
