Michael Sanderling will be appointed as the next Principal Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra. The Lucerne Symphony Orchestra is an orchestra of the Lucerne Theater. It replaces James Gaffigan, who has served as the principal conductor since the 2011/2012 season.

Sanderling was born in 1967 in East Berlin, 52 years old. With his conductor Kurt Sanderling as his father, he studied cello at Hanns Eisler Academy of Music.

After graduating, he became a conductor after working as a cellist for the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. From 2011/2012 season to 2019/20 season, he has served as the principal conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra.
