The Santa Cecilia National Academy Orchestra has announced that it will welcome Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša as Principal Guest Conductor. His term is three years from the 2021/2022 season.
The Rome-based the Santa Cecilia National Academy Orchestra is currently headed by British conductor Antonio Pappano. Pappano will retire at the end of the 2022/2023 season with the appointment of Principal Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra.
Hrůša was born in Brno, Czech Republic and is 39 years old. He studied conducting with Jiří Bělohlávek and Radomil Eliška at the Prague Conservatory.
Since 2008 he has succeeded Jiří Bělohlávek as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Prague Philharmonia. In 2010 he was the youngest conductor of the opening concert of the music festival “Prague Spring”.
In 2011, he was selected by the British music magazine “Gramophone” as “10 young conductors who are likely to be major conductors”, and in 2016 he became the principal conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in Germany. With his contract extended, his term is until 2026.
He has also been the Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in the United Kingdom since 2017 and the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra since 2018. He was also the principal guest conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra from 2010 to 2018 in Japan.
