On February 1, the US music site “Chicago Classical Review” published an article predicting the successor to Riccardo Muti, the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Muti, who turned 80 in July last year, extended his contract in the fall, but only for one year. Therefore, there is a strong view that he will retire at the end of the 2022/2023 season.
Lawrence A. Johnson, who wrote the article, named four people: Manfred Honeck (63), Jakub Hrůša (40), Susanna Malkki (52), and Marin Alsop (65). He also named Esa-Pekka Salonen (63) as a dark horse and Simon Rattle (67) as a Secret Weapon.
