WARSAW 〓 Taiwanese government protests at Chopin International Piano Competition over names of participants’ countries

2020/03/13

The Taiwanese government is protesting against the authorities of the Chopin International Piano Competition over the notation “China, Taiwan”. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday.

According to reports from Taiwan and other sources, the official website describes Hong Kong pianists as “China, Hong Kong.” For this reason, if the expression “China, Taiwan” is used for a Taiwanese pianist, there is a problem that Taiwan is regarded as a part of China.

The expression “China, Taiwan” is in line with China’s claim to emphasize “one China” compared to “Chinese Taipei” used in places such as the Olympic Games.

The Chopin International Piano Competition is one of the three major competitions in the world and is held once every five years.

The 18th contest this year will take place from October 1 to 23. Preliminary round contestants were announced on March 9, and there are nine names of Taiwanese pianists.
