TOKYO 〓 The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra Appoints Singaporean As Next Chief Conductor

On 18 May, the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra announced that Kahchun Wong(黃佳俊) from Singapore will be its next Chief Conductor, succeeding Pietari Inkinen, who has held the post since 2016.

His term of office is for five years, starting with the 2023/2024 season. Wong has served as principal guest conductor since September 2021.

Wong was born in Singapore and is 35 years old. He studied opera and orchestra conducting at the Hans Eisler Music University in Berlin, Germany.

In 2016, He was the first Asian to win the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition, presided over by the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra.

Since the 2018/2019 season, he has been Principal Conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra in Germany. He will retire at the end of the 2021/2022 season.
