TOKYO 〓 New National Theater Tokyo announces 2020/2021 season performance lineup

The New National Theater Tokyo has announced its lineup for the 2020/2021 season on the 8th. According to the announcement, there are five new productions for the 2020/2021 season. Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, Dai Fujikura’s “A Dream of Armageddon”, Stravinsky’s “Le Rossignol”, Tchaikovsky’s “Iolanta”, Bizet’s “Carmen” Will be staged. Revival performance is 6 works.

The season begins with David McVicar’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. The production premiered in 2004 at the La Monnaie in Brussels, Belgium. In addition, Fujikura’s new work “A Dream of Armageddon” will be premiered in the world. This is the second of a commissioned composition series for Japanese composers following the previous season’s “Asters”.

Fujikura is a 42-year-old born in Osaka. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music in England, he has been active in composing music based in London. The new work is based on H.G. Wells’ SF short story “A Dream of Armageddon” written in the early 20th century. The production was directed by Lydia Steier, who gained attention at “The Magic Flute” in the 2018 Salzburg Festival.
