The Paris National Opera (Opéra national de Paris) has announced that the restoration of the Palais Garnier will require five years, extending the closure period until 2032. The project was originally scheduled to begin in 2027 and conclude in 2029.
Designed by Charles Garnier and opened in 1875, the Palais Garnier marks its 150th anniversary this year. It served as the home of the Paris National Opera until the Opéra Bastille opened in 1989 and has long been known as a Parisian landmark, celebrated for its magnificent interior and exterior as well as the auditorium ceiling painted by Marc Chagall in 1964.
According to the announcement, the project is taking longer than expected because lead needs to be removed from various parts of the building, particularly around the stage.
The total cost of the restoration work is estimated at 450 million euros. Large-scale renovations are also planned for the Opéra Bastille, but the schedule to close the venue for three years starting in 2030 is reportedly being pushed back.
