The Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra has announced the appointment of Danish conductor Thomas Dausgaard as its Principal Guest Conductor. The three-year term will begin with the 2027/2028 season (starting in April 2027).
Dausgaard, 63, was born in Copenhagen. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen and the Royal College of Music in London, and has served as chief conductor of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra (1997–2019), the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (2004–2011), and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (2016–2022).
He was appointed music director of the Seattle Symphony in 2019, but stirred controversy in 2022—amid the COVID-19 pandemic—by abruptly resigning via an email sent to the orchestra; he was also effectively ousted from the BBC Scottish Symphony, an organization with which he had ceased all communication.
He will make his debut with the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra in October 2025. In his capacity as Principal Guest Conductor, he is scheduled to conduct Sibelius’s Violin Concerto and Rangaard’s Symphony No. 1, “Cliffside Idyll,” on January 14 and 15, 2028, followed by a program featuring Schubert’s Symphony No. 1 and Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, “Titan,” on January 21, 2028.
