The 1731 Stradivarius violin known as the “Heifetz, Piel” which was used by Jascha Heifetz, one of the most renowned violinists of the 20th century, during his prime, has been put up for auction for the first time in 75 years.
The auction will be conducted by Tarisio, based in New York. There are three violins that were used by Heifetz, two of which are owned by private foundations, and the remaining one is the “Heifetz Peel” which was used for 28 years from 1922 and supported his heyday.
Heifetz sold “Heifetz, Piel” in November 1950 to an airline executive. It then passed into the hands of an amateur violinist and lawyer in 1971, who owned it for over 50 years. The lawyer passed away last year, and the violin was put up for auction.
