Washington National Opera has announced that American conductor Robert Spano will be its next music director. His term will begin with the 2025/2026 season, succeeding Evan Rogister, who has held the position since 2018.
Spano, 61, was born in Conneaut, Ohio. He was music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (2001-2021) and currently serves as music director of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Aspen Music Festival. He was also named principal conductor of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra this past January.
Washington National Opera is the “President’s Opera House” at the Kennedy Center, where tenor Placido Domingo served as artistic director from 1996 to 2011. Currently, director Francesca Zambello serves as artistic director.
