The Vienna Philharmonic announced that it will perform a concert at Berlin’s open-air theater, the “Waldbühne. The “Waldbühne” hosts a variety of events each summer, most notably an open-air concert by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra to close out the season. This will be the debut for the Vienna Philharmonic.
The “Waldbuehne” is located in the forest in the Charlottenburg district and was one of the structures built for the 1936 Berlin Olympics. It is said that gymnastics and other competitions were held there. Modeled after an ancient Greek amphitheater, it has 22,000 seats.
The concert will be held on May 9 next year, which is “Europe Day. On this day in 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman announced the “Schuman Plan” in Paris, and the movement for European integration began in earnest.
The concert will commemorate this event, and the program will feature works by European composers. The program includes Verdi’s Overture to “La Forza del Destino,” Falla’s ballet “The Three Cornered Hat,” and Chabrier’s “Spanish Rhapsody. Riccardo Muti, who has a close relationship with the orchestra, will conduct.
