Liviu Prunaru, concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Netherlands, will retire at the end of this season. Prunaru was appointed concertmaster in 2006. For the time being, the orchestra will be led by Bulgarian-born co-concertmaster Vesko Eschkenazy.
Prunaru was born in 1969 in Craiova, Romania, and is 55 years old. He studied at the “Menuhin Academy” in Gstaad, Switzerland, and later in New York under Dorothy Delay and Itzhak Perlman.
He has won many prizes in competitions, including the second prize at the “Queen Elisabeth International Competition” in 1993, and has performed as a soloist with renowned orchestras and musicians. After 14 years of teaching at his alma mater, the Menuhin Academy, he joined the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
