The Vienna Art Week(Wiener Festwochen) has announced that it will not invite the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra led by Teodor Currentzis. over the protests of Oksana Lyniv, who will lead Ukraine’s Kiev Symphony Orchestra as a guest. Lyniv had said in an interview that she could not perform with Currentzis, who was ambiguous about Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine.
According to the original schedule, Lyniv and her colleagues will perform Ukrainian composer Yevhen Stankovich’s kaddish requiem “Barbi Yar” at the Konzerthaus on June 2. Ten days later, the Currentzis were to perform “War Requiem” at the Burgtheater.
Organizers have explained that the pairing of the two exciting works “intentionally questions the political and social frontiers,” but Artistic Director of the Artistic Week Milo Rau, a director, playwright, filmmaker, and journalist, said, “We respect Lyniv’s wish not to perform together. We will respect her wish not to perform with him.”
The Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra also issued a statement, saying, “We understand that Lyniv and others wanted Kulenzis to make a statement against Russia’s war of aggression,” prefacing the statement with, “But we did not ask him to do so, considering what consequences such a statement would have for him.”
