INDIANAPOLIS 〓 Jun Märkl will be its next music director of the Indianapolis Symphony

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in the United States has announced that German conductor Jun Märkl will be its next music director. The post of music director had been vacant since Krzysztof Urbański retired in 2021.

The term of office will begin in the 2025/2026 season, and Märkl will also assume the position of Chief Conductor of the Residentie Orkest Den Haag, the Netherlands, beginning this season.

Märkl was born in Munich and is 65 years old. He is the son of a German father and a Japanese mother. He studied violin, piano, and conducting at the Hanover Conservatory, and later studied with Serge Celibidacke. He also studied under Seiji Ozawa, and made a splash in 1991 when he was appointed General Music Director of the Saarland State Theater at a young age (-1994).

He has since served as Music Director and Chief Conductor of the National Theater Mannheim (1994-2000), Orchestre National de Lyon (2005-2011), and the MDR Symphony Orchestra in Leipzig (2007-2012).

He has also served as Music Director of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra since the 2021/2022 season and as Artistic Advisor to the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra.
