2024/01/25

The UK-based music website Bachtrack recently released its annual ranking based on the number of performances. According to the report, the “busiest conductor” in 2023 (by number of concerts conducted) was Andris Nelsons, who has held the No. 1 spot since passing Valery Gergiev in 2018.

The second through fifth places are occupied by Klaus Mäkelä, Paavo Järvi, Jakub Hrůša, and Manfred Honeck, with Fabio Luisi in sixth place. Surprisingly, Herbert Blomstedt, at 96, is ranked 10th. Valery Gergiev, whose frequency has decreased due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is out of the top 10.

Meanwhile, the “busiest orchestras” were the Berlin Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and Boston Symphony, in that order. U.S. orchestras occupied most of the top five spots. Surprisingly, Italy’s Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia is in sixth place, ahead of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Turning to pianists, Kirill Gerstein leads in the number of performances, ahead of Yuja Wang; Daniil Trifonov is in second place, with Cho Sung Jin moving up to third; Yuja Wang is in fourth place, followed by Vikingul Olafsson.

Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” took first place, followed by “La bohème,” “Madame Butterfly,” “Don Giovanni,” “La traviata,” “The Marriage of Figaro,” “Turandot,” “Tosca,” “Carmen,” and “Aida,” with many Puccini operas in second through tenth place.
