The “Opernball” organized by the State Opera is an annual event held on the Thursday before “Ash Wednesday” in February. Founded in 1877 during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it is one of the most prestigious dance parties in Europe.

The event was cancelled for two consecutive years in 2021 and 2022 due to the global outbreak of the corona pandemic, but was revived in 2023. Every year, more than 5,000 people, including guests from abroad, participate in the event, and approximately 2.5 million people are said to watch the broadcast that is relayed to the entire world.
