BERLIN 〓 Berlin Philharmonic creates its first female concertmaster: Vineta Sareika-Völkner takes over

The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra announced the promotion of first violinist Vineta Sareika-Völkner to first concertmaster on February 17. This marks the first female concertmaster in the orchestra’s 140-year history.

Sareika-Völkner is 36 years old and was born in Jurmala, Latvia. She studied with Gerard Poullet at the Paris Conservatoire and with Augustin Dumay at the Queen Elisabeth Academy of Music. In 2009, she won The Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition.

She then worked as concertmaster of the Royal Flanders Philharmonic Orchestra in Belgium, among others, and was 1st violin of the Artemis String Quartet from 2012, but left in 2021 when she had a baby. 2022 she joined the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, joining the 1st Violin section.
