YOKOHAMA 〓 Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates its 50th anniversary

The Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, held a press conference at the Kanagawa Prefectural Office on January 17. The meeting was attended by President Takashi Ueno, principal conductor Kentaro Kawase, and Governor Yuji Kuroiwa of Kanagawa Prefecture. The governor said, “The Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra has a high level of performance and is one of the most popular orchestras in japan. I want you to deliver wonderful music to various parts of the prefecture.”

The Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra was established in 1970 as the Laurier Orchestra. The following year, the name was changed to the current name, and it has become popular as a community-based orchestra.

The press conference revealed that a celebration concert to commemorate the 50th anniversary will take place on November 21. Kawase conducts Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 “Symphony of a Thousand People”. The venue is Yokohama Minatomirai Hall. For choirs that require about 300 people, they will call for general public offerings in addition to the chorus of the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, based on the history of cherishing local community, a tour around 10 locations in the prefecture is planned from May 2020 to March 2021.
