The Royal Scottish National Orchestra has announced that it will appoint Lithuanian conductor Giedrė Šlekytė as its next music director. He will succeed Thomas Dausgaard, who has held the position since 2018, and his term will begin in the 2027/2028 season.
Šlekytė is a 36-year-old born in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. She studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, the University of Music and Performing Arts Leipzig, and the University of the Arts Zurich. In 2013, she won second prize at the Solon Michelides Conducting Competition held in Cyprus, and in 2015 she was nominated for the Young Conductor Award at the Salzburg Festival.
Also that year, She won a prize at the Nicolai Malko International Young Conductors Competition held in Copenhagen. From the 2016/2017 season, She served as the conductor of the Klagenfurt Municipal Theatre in Austria for two seasons.
