The Polish National Opera (Teatr Wielki w Warszawie) in Warsaw has announced that it will appoint Israeli-American conductor Yoel Gamzou as its new music director. His term will begin in September 2026, succeeding French conductor Patrick Fournilière, who has held the position since the 2020/2021 season.
Gamzou is a 38-year-old born in Tel Aviv, Israel. He is one of the promising young composers, having served as the music director of the Bremen Municipal Theatre in Germany from 2018 to 2022. He became interested in Mahler’s Symphony No. 10 during his middle school years and has continued to work on completing it. He is known for premiering and recording his own “Gamzou version” in 2011, the 100th anniversary of Mahler’s death, while still in his twenties.
