The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s annual outdoor concert, the “Summer Night Concert,” is facing a crisis of survival. The city government has announced that it will cut its subsidy of 250,000 euros. This year’s concert was scheduled for June 19th, but the orchestra’s president, Daniel Froschauer, said, “We are shocked by the decision. Without the subsidy, we cannot continue the concert.”
The concert has been a free summer event held every summer since 2005 at Schönbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It attracts 100,000 people and is broadcast in over 80 countries. Every year, a famous soloist is invited, and in 2025, Tugan Sokhiev was conducting and tenor Piotr Beczala was performing.
