The Belgian early music orchestra Anima Eterna has dismissed its founder, Jos Van Immerseel. The board of directors has stated that the reason for the dismissal is “Unfortunately, due to his continued aggressive attitude and repeated violations of contractual obligations, we have come to the conclusion that there is no other option than to end our collaboration with him.”

Immerseel was born in Antwerp and is 78 years old. He studied piano, organ and harpsichord at the Antwerp Royal Conservatory, where he studied under Kenneth Gilbert and others. He later founded the early music ensemble Collegium Musicum in Antwerp, and expanded his repertoire from Renaissance music to Romantic music.

On the other hand, he has been a professor at his alma mater since 1972, and has been teaching basso continuo and harpsichord. He has also taught at the Paris Conservatoire and the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam.

Anima Eterna was founded in Bruges in 1987 by Immerseel, and has been involved in the performance and recording of works from the 18th and 19th centuries. The group established its reputation through performances and recordings of Mozart’s piano concertos and Beethoven and Schubert’s symphonies, and has now expanded its repertoire to include late Romantic music.
