The Metropolitan Opera announced on March 19 that it will cancel all remaining performance in the 2019/2020 season due to the spread of the new coronavirus.
The season ends on May 9th. The Metropolitan Opera has already announced that it will cancel the performance by March 31.
According to The New York Times, the Metropolitan Opera will lose more than $ 60 million due to cancellation of the performance.
The orchestra members and choir members will be laid off following the decision, and salary payments will be discontinued in March, except for continuing health care coverage.
Meanwhile, it was also revealed that a highly-paid member of the management staff would reduce salaries, and general manager Peter Gerb would abandon his entire salary.
The Metropolitan Opera has already told performers who will cancel their performance that they will not be paid. The force majeure clause in the performance contract applies.
