The Minnesota Orchestra has announced that Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård will be its next music director. Søndergård will serve a five-year term beginning with the 2023/2024 season. He succeeds Osmo Vänskä, who retired after the 2021/2022 season, having held the position since 2003.

Sondergaard was born in 1969 in Holstebro, Denmark, and is 52 years old. After studying at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, he joined the Royal Danish Orchestra in 1992 as a percussionist before moving to conducting.

He was Chief Conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra (2009-2012) and Chief Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (2012-2020) before becoming Chief Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in 2018.
