NEW YORK 〓 A 1714 Stradivarius “Da Vinci” sold for $15.34 million at the auction

A 1714 Stradivarius “Da Vinci” sold for $15.34 million at the New York auction house Tarisio on August 9. This is the second highest bid for a Stradivarius in history, following “Lady Brant” which sold for $15.9 million in 2011.

The “Da Vinci” was played by American violinist Toscha Seidel (1899-1962), who used it to record the soundtrack for the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz.

The seller, is a Japanese Famous entrepreneurs, told the interviewer, “I have owned it for 10 years and want to put it to rest. From now on, I want to give musicians around the world a chance to play it”.

Seidel was born in Ukraine-Odessa and studied under Leopold Auer at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. He later moved to the United States and became a U.S. citizen. He played in golden age of Virtuoso violinists with Mischa Elman and Yasha Heifetz.
