The next music director of the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra has been named Thierry Fischer. He replaced Marin Alsop, who has been a music director since 2012. The term is from March 2020. Fischer has been the principal guest conductor for the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra since 2017. The Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1954 and is one of the finest orchestras in South America.
Fisher was born in Zambia in 1957 under Swiss parents. He started his career as a flute player and studied with Aurèle Nicolet. After that he became principal flute player of the Hamburg State Opera, the Zurich Opera, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. After that, he was trained under Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Claudio Abbado.
Fischer has served as the principal conductor of the Ulster Orchestra (2001-2006) and the BBC Welsh National Orchestra (2006-2012). In Japan, he has also served as a principal conductor (currently an honored guest conductor) of the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra from 2008 to 2011. Music director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra since 2009.
