Semyon Bychkov, music director of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, has issued a statement protesting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Rudolfinum, the home of the orchestra and the main venue for the Prague Spring Music Festival, bears the Ukrainian flag to show solidarity.

Bychkov was born in 1952 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) during the Soviet era and is 69 years old. He is a Jewish Russian, his grandfather was the conductor of the Odessa Opera, and his father was a doctor.

He graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory under Ilya Musin at the top of his class, but was exiled from the Soviet Union to the United States in 1974 because of his political beliefs.

The statement is as follows.

“Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the lies that are spreading about it must stop before the rest of the world finds itself in the middle of another war. We must not remain silent and watch as history repeats itself as in 1956, 1968 and beyond. before and after. The bearers of death and destruction must be held accountable and rejected. “
