VIENNA 〓 Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra will appoint Marin Alsop to Principal Conductor

The Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra(Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien) will have Marin Alsop as Principal Conductor from the 2019/2020 season. She replaces Cornelius Meister, who has served as Principal conductor since 2010. The Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra is a broadcast orchestra belonging to the “Austrian Broadcasting Association = ORF”, the base of which is the capital Vienna. Founded in 1969.

Alsop was 62 years old, born in Manhattan, New York, 1956. After graduating from Yale University, studied the violin at the Juilliard School of Music and obtained a master’s and doctor’s degree. Received the teachings of Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa and others at the Tanglewood Music Festival and won the 1989 “Koussevitzky” award. After that, she served as the music director of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (1993-2005) and the Principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (2002-2008).

In 2005 she became music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. As female conductor became the music director of the major orchestra of the United States for the first time. The term of office lasts until the 2021/2022 season. In addition, she recorded the symphony of Brahms with the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 2004 to 2006, and completed the first full compilation by female conductor.
