PRAGUE 〓 Renovation of the Prague State Opera completed and reopened

2020/01/05

The renovation of the Prague State Opera has been completed for about three years, and a concert will be held on the 5th to celebrate the reopening. The building was opened in 1888 as “New German Theater”. Behind this was the movement of Germans who wanted to perform in opera in German, and the “German theater association”, which they formed, was run. Known conductors such as Gustav Mahler,Karl Muck,Otto Klemperer,George Szell have been music directors of all time, and were known as prestigious theaters.

After World War II, the theater became Czechoslovakian state-owned, renamed the “Smetana Theater” in 1949, and eventually became part of the National Theater, and in 1992 became the current “Prague State Opera”. Extensive renovation work had not been completed since the 1970s. This time, 51 million euros were invested, and the original curtain was restored. The curtain was burned down in 1945. In addition, modernization work is being carried out, such as installing touch screens in all approximately 1,000 seats.
