Zubin Mehta is planning a world tour in 2026, when he turns 90. Recently, he has canceled conducting outside of his home in Los Angeles, but in January, ahead of his birthday on April 29, it was announced that he will kick off the tour by conducting the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra in his hometown of Bombay.
The concerts will be held on the 15th and 16th, featuring pianist Lang Lang and violinist Pinchas Zukerman, and the program will include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 and No. 7, Piano Concerto “Emperor,” and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5.
Mehta first gained attention in 1958 when he won the Liverpool International Conducting Competition in the UK, and the Belgrade Philharmonic is one of the orchestras he has conducted since the beginning of his career.
After the civil war in the former Yugoslavia meant that the orchestra was no longer able to function, he conducted the celebratory concert for its reorganization as the Serbian capital’s orchestra in 2000, and has since been a guest conductor almost every year.
