On March 25, Sweden’s Norrköping Symphony Orchestra bestowed the title of Honorary Conductor upon 98-year-old Herbert Blomstedt, the oldest conductor in the world. Blomstedt made his professional debut in February 1954. Shortly thereafter, from 1954 to 1962, he served as the orchestra’s principal conductor, starting his international career.
This time, he will be making his first guest appearance since 2012, conducting Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 and No. 4. Reflecting on his appointment as Honorary Conductor, he said, “Even though they were young, they placed their complete trust in my instructions, and we grew together.” When asked about what motivates him to continue making music, he replied, “My love for music liberates me and opens my heart to the world and to eternity.”
