The Theater Hagen in western Germany has announced that Sebastian Lang-Lessing will be its new music director. He will succeed Joseph Trafton, who held the position from the 2017/2018 season, and will serve from the 2025/2026 season.

Last summer, it was decided that Helmes Helfricht would succeed Trafton. However, Helfricht was later appointed as the General Music Director of the Theater Erfurt from the 2025/2026 season, and the contract was terminated.

Lang-Lessing was born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, and is 59 years old. After studying in Hamburg, he began his conducting career as assistant conductor at the Hamburg State Opera. He was then selected by Götz Friedrich, the artistic director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, to be the youngest permanent conductor in 1993.

He has since held the positions of Music Director of the Lorraine National Opera in France (1999–2006), Principal Conductor of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in Australia (2004–2011), Music Director of the San Antonio Symphony in the United States (2010–2020), and Music Director of the Korean National Opera in Seoul (2020–2024).
