MILAN 〓 Christian Thielemann withdraws from conducting the new Ring cycle at La Scala

2024/09/15

Christian Thielemann, who was scheduled to conduct the new Wagner “Ring Cycle” at La Scala in Milan, has withdrawn from the project. He underwent tendon surgery in October and will require five weeks of rehabilitation after the operation, so he will not be able to conduct “Das Rheingold”, which is scheduled to open on October 28th. As a result, he has decided to withdraw from conducting the entire tetralogy.

The new Ring cycle at La Scala will be the first in 10 years, and David McVicar will be directing the new production. Following Thielemann’s withdrawal, Simone Young(October 28, 31, November 3) and Alexander Sodhi(November 5, 7, 10) will be taking over as substitutes. The conductors for the planned “Valkyrie” and “Siegfried” productions for the 2024/2025 season have not yet been announced.
