The Volksoper in Vienna has extended its contract with Dutch director Lotte de Beer, who serves as artistic director. The contract renewal will extend her term until 2032.
Beer has been in the position since 2022, and when her first term expired, an open call for applications was held, to which 13 people applied, including Beer, but the decision to extend Beer’s contract was unanimous, according to the company.
Bear, 42, was born in Eindhoven in the southern part of the Netherlands. She studied singing and piano in Maastricht, then majored in theater and directing at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, where she graduated in 2009 and made her debut after studying with the brilliant director Peter Konwitschny. She is currently expanding her activities mainly in Europe.
In 2015 she won the “Newcomer of the Year” award at the “International Opera Awards” in the U.K. In 2016 she was nominated for “Best Director” at the Austrian Music Theatre Awards for “The Pearl Pickers” at the Theater an der Wien. She was also nominated for the “Best Director” of the “International Opera Award” in 2020.
