Franz Bartolomey, an Austrian cellist and longtime principal cellist of the Vienna Philharmonic, died on December 1 at the age of 76. His grandfather(principal clarinetist) and father (violinist and deputy director) were also members of the Vienna Philharmonic.
He was born in Vienna and studied at the University of Music and Drama in Vienna. In 1967, he joined the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. After then he joined the Vienna Philharmonic in 1973 and remained principal for 39 years until his retirement in 2012, making him the longest tenured principal in the orchestra’s history.
As a soloist, he has performed with many other great conductors. Since 2004, he has also served as principal of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra led by Claudio Abbado. As a chamber musician, he was active in the Vienna Musikverein Quartet and the Wiener Virtuosen.
