PRAGUE 〓 Andriy Yurkevych has been named music director of the Prague State Opera

Prague State Opera has announced that it will welcome Ukrainian conductor Andriy Yurkevych as its next music director, succeeding Karl-Heinz Steffens, who has held that position since 2019, with his term beginning in the new season.

Yurkevych was born in Zboriu, in western Ukraine near the Polish border, and after graduating from the Lviv Conservatory of Music, he studied with Gianluigi Gelmetti at the Conservatory of Chigiana in Italy and with Alberto Zedda in Pesaro.

Since 1996, he has been a permanent conductor of the Lviv State Opera. Later, he served as general conductor of the Odessa Opera and Ballet and music director of the Polish National Theater of Warsaw.

He is currently the Music Director of the Moldovan National Opera.
