The British government has announced the New Year Honours for 2024: Antonio Pappano, music director of the Royal Opera House since 2002 and retiring at the end of the 2023/2024 season, was awarded the Royal Victorian Order.
According to the announcement, the Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) was awarded to composer Judith Weir in the Order of Music. Weir, 69, was born in Cambridge and has served as the first female “Master of the King’s Music” since 2014.
The Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) was also awarded to Stuart Murphy, who served as General Director of the English National Opera from 2018 to 2023.
Below them, four have been awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Lawrence Cummings, music director of the London Handel Festival; Alex Liedijk, general director of the Scottish National Opera; soprano Carolyn Sampson; and Emma Wilson, technical, production, and costume director at the Royal Opera House.
