FRANKFURT 〓 Oper Frankfurt Appoints Thomas Guggeis As General Music Director

The Oper Frankfurt has announced that it will welcome Thomas Guggeis as the next music director. He succeeded Sebastian Weigle, who has been in charge since the 2008/2009 season, and has a term of five years from the 2023/2024 season.

Guggeis is 28 years old born in Dachau. After graduating from the Straubing Institute of Physical Education, he studied physics and conducting in Munich and earned a bachelor’s degree in quantum physics.

After that, he worked as a timpanist of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. After becoming a conductor, he was an assistant to Daniel Barenboim at the Berlin State Opera.

In March 2018, he hurriedly conducted “Salome” on behalf of Christoph von Dohnányi at the Berlin State Opera with sensational success and attracted a lot of attention. He is currently the conductor of the Berlin State Opera(2020/2021-) and the Stuttgart State Opera(2018/2019-).
