BERLIN 〓 Berliner Philharmoniker will hold an annual “European Concert” on May 1st

2020/04/28

The Berliner Philharmoniker has announced that it will hold an annual “European Concert” on May 1st, the anniversary of its founding.

According to the announcement, the performance will be performed without an audience at the Philharmonic, where they are based, with smaller orchestra formations. Conducted by the chief conductor of the orchestra, Kirill Petrenko.

At the opening, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier gives a speech calling for solidarity in Europe.

It will be streamed on TV, radio and orchestra’s streaming service “Digital Concert Hall”.

The “European Concert” was founded in 1991 with the idea of Claudio Abbado, who succeeded Herbert von Karajan. It has been held every year while visiting the halls and historic buildings around Europe.

Behind the German government’s forcing concerts, there seems to be a desire to sing solidarity in Europe, which has been suffering from the spread of the new coronavirus.

However, on the other hand, the government prohibits holding events including concerts throughout August.

Although it is a concert without an audience, it is likely that there will be objection to the government-sponsored concert breaking the ban.
