2020/03/26

Orchestral work “Uzu” by Hosokawa Toshio was selected for the 68th “Odaka Prize”. This is Hosokawa’s fourth award.

The award is a composition award organized by the NHK Symphony Orchestra. It was established in 1952 to honor the orchestra’s permanent conductor, Otaka Hisatada.

It has been awarded for outstanding orchestral works by Japanese composers premiered during the past year.

The award-winning work is a joint commission of Suntory Hall, the Sochi Winter Art Festival in Russia, and Essen Philharmonic. The sound by the orchestra spreads like a swirl.

It was premiered at the Suntory Hall in November last year by the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra under the Yoichi Sugiyama.

Hosokawa is 64 years old born in Hiroshima.

As one of Japan’s leading composers, he has been highly evaluated internationally, receiving commissions from orchestras, music festivals, and the opera theaters in Europe and the United States.

The award-winning work will be performed by the NHK Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Spano, at the “Music Tomorrow 2020” to be held at the Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall on May 4.
