STOCKHOLM 〓 Alan Gilbert will become music director of Royal Swedish Opera

US conductor Alan Gilbert has been appointed music director of the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm. From 2021/2022 season. Gilbert is 52 years old born in New York, USA. Both American father and Japanese mother are members of the New York Philharmonic. He studied violin at the New England Conservatory of Music, composing music at Harvard University, and conducting at The Juilliard School and Curtis Institute of Music.

He has been the Principal Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (2000-2008), Music Director of the New York Philharmonic (2009-2018), and from the 2019/2020 season, Music director of the Hamburg’s NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester (former NDR Symphony Orchestra). In Japan, he has been the principal guest conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra for a three-year term since April 2018.
