JoAnn Falletta extends contract with Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Faretta has been a music director since 1999, and this extension extends her term to 2026. The Buffalo Philharmonic is an orchestra based in Buffalo in northwestern New York State. Founded in 1934, successive music directors include William Steinberg, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Semyon Bychkov.

Faretta was born in 1954 in New York City. After studying classical guitar and mandolin at the age of seven, she studied guitar at the Manes School of Music, and then studied conducting at the The Juilliard School and Queens College Aaron Copland School of Music at New York City University.

She is actively working on recording with Buffalo Philharmonic and won the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Modern Composition for her recording of “Mr. Tamblinman” composed by John Corigliano. From 2011 to 2014, she served as Chief Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra in Northern Ireland.
