Peter Gelb, president of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, has announced that he will be working on new Wagner’s “The Ring of the Nibelung”. Gelb responded to an interview with The New York Times.
According to the article, the new “Ring Cycle” will begin in 2025 and will have four works by the end of the 2026/2027 season.
The director is Richard Jones, a British director. He is currently working on a new cycle at the English National Opera. “Valkyrie” which is the first performance of the new cycle will begin on November 19th. His cycle ends in 2025.
According to Gelb, he initially sought to perform a new cycle directed by Stefan Herheim. He is also currently working on a new cycle at Deutsche Oper Berlin, which he said could not be realized due to a contract.
The current “Ring Cycle” of the Metropolitan Opera was directed by Robert Lepage, who is known for directing “Cirque du Soleil”. “Das Rheingold” first appeared in 2010, and by 2012, four parts had been released, and performances had been held until 2019.
