CHICAGO 〓 Members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra have entered a strike

2019/03/11

The Members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra have entered a strike from the morning of March 11. Because negotiations on the signing of a new collective bargaining agreement did not reach an agreement, the labor agreement that was effective until that date has expired on the 10th.

The Members says Piquet line will be set at the entrance of the orchestra hall every day from 8 am. It was 2012 that the strike was held before. Regarding the new collective agreement, Riccardo Muti, music director, was sending an open letter seeking good deeds to the management side.

What is becoming a problem is the change in salary increase and pension system. On the management side, for the pension, it is proposed that the pension system of musicians will be shifted from the defined benefit plan to the direct contribution type system. As for salary, the management side presented a plan to raise the base salary annually by 5% over three seasons to 167,094 dollars. Regarding medical care, the management side announced that it will maintain current compensation without increasing the burden amount.

On the other hand, the union side is against the change of the pension system itself. Regarding the amount of salary increase as well, “It is lower than the same level of the orchestra and the difference is opening up,” strongly opposing.
