Seoul 〓 MyungWhun Chung appointed as chief conductor of the KBS Symphony Orchestra

South Korea’s state broadcaster KBS announced that the KBS Symphony Orchestra will welcome MyungWhun Chung as its 10th Chief Conductor and Music Director. His term will run for three years starting January 1, 2026. He succeeds Pietari Inkinen, who has held the position since 2022 and whose three-year term is ending.

Chung, 72, was born in Seoul. He has been appointed to succeed Riccardo Chailly as Music Director of La Scala in Milan starting in 2027. Chung was appointed Principal Conductor and Music Director of the KBS Symphony Orchestra in 1998 but resigned after just one year. However, he was appointed the orchestra’s first Honorary Conductor in 2021.
