TORONTO 〓 Andrew Davis got a surprise present from the orchestra

At the concert of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra performed on the 2nd, Andrew Davis began conducting Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” and the melody became “Happy Birthday” unexpectedly. This day was Davis’ 75th birthday. It was a surprise present from the orchestra. Davis served as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1975 to 1988, and is now a Conductor Laureate.

Davis was born in 1944 in Ashridge, a city near London. After studying at the Royal Academy of Music, he debuted in 1970 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. After serving as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, he served as Principal Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1989 to 2000. He is currently the principal conductor of Chicago Lyric Opera (2000 -) and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (2012 -).
