SALZBURG 〓 Summer music festival announces sudden resignation of artistic director Markus Hinterhäuser

Markus Hinterhäuser, artistic director of the Salzburg Festival in Austria, will step down on September 30, 2026, after the end of the summer festival. He has held the position since 2016, and his contract was renewed in 2024, extending his term until 2031.

Hinterhäuser is an Austrian, 67 years old, born in La Spezia on the Ligurian coast of northwestern Italy. He studied with Elisabeth Leonskaja at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts and with Oleg Meisenberg at the Mozarteum University Salzburg, where he had a successful career as a pianist.
