The Nashville Symphony announced that it has appointed Leonard Slatkin, a leading figure in American conducting, as its new Music Director. The position had been vacant since Giancarlo Guerrero stepped down following the 2024/2025 season.
Slatkin, 81, was born in Los Angeles. After serving as Music Advisor to the Nashville Symphony from 2006 to 2009, he resumed the role in 2025. His tenure as Music Director will span three years starting with the new season.
Slatkin served as Music Director of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra from 1979 to 1996, where he is known for significantly raising the orchestra’s performance standards and profile.
He subsequently served as Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. (1996–2008), the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (2008–2018), and the Orchestre National de Lyon (2011–2017).
